Captain Yuka Layton
Lieutenant J.G. Dom Martinez
DFS Lavie, Ready Room
Captain Yuka Layton’s Office
August 20, 4566, 0900 hrs
“Could you come to my Ready Room when you are free… It is nothing urgent however we have not been formally introduced… I like to check in with all my senior and most of my junior officers upon arrival… I am a little late in your case but I still feel we should have this chat.” She explained; she knew the explanation was not necessary as she was his commander but she felt giving him one anyway was useful for some reason."I will be there shortly, Martinez out" said Dom, as he left the bay and started to make his way to the bridge. Dom thought about changing out of his flight suit, but he just got into the suit. And Dom did not want to keep the Captain waiting.
Dom quickly made his way up to the bridge. The layout for a destroyer was a still new to Dom, so he grabbed a data pad, and made his way as quickly as he could. He made a straight line for the ready room. He tapped on the intercom button outside of the Captain's ready room. He looked around the bridge, the heart of the ship was filled with chatter, just the average chatter of a command center. Unlike starfleet vessels, crews on military vessel actually talked to each other and about topics of relevance.
Sakura was on the bridge overseeing the bridge since Yuka was busy. She was more focused on operations right now though as she was in a conversation about the repairs with one of the engineering folks who was on the bridge. Once Dom pressed the call button Yuka replied "Enter" simply.
She was looking over a updated personnel roster when he arrived; they had a number of new people who had arrived with the Essex; Dom, his flight crew, his sister, Kiyoko and an intel unit along with their new Doctor.
Dom noticed Sukara was on the bridge, but he was not on the bridge for a social call. Dom heard his cue to walk into the room. He made his way over to the desk of Yuka. He snapped to the position of attention. And saluted the Captain. He could not believe how long she looked. And how short she was, he did his best to make eye contact with her. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Domingo Ramon Martinez, reporting as ordered, Ma'am" said Dom, he thought to himself. Man that was a mouthful to say.
Yuka stood up returning his salute. "Welcome aboard Lieutenant... I'm Captain Yuka Layton... At ease." She noticed him eyeing her; she was use to this; being his age and a Captain flew most people for a loop. "Are our flight personnel satisfactory thus-far?" She asked.
Dom went from the position of attention to a parade position. Dom was not sure how to answer the question his new young captain had asked him. "Most of them are still pretty green and the couple of pilots I have that have experience are pulling double duties" said Dom, as he hoped that the Captain would not ask him to go into further detail.
"And how are you acclimating?"
He really tried to get past the Captain's young like appearance, but her face was so young, but he could tell by looking at her, he could tell that she had seen her fare share of combat, probably in a mech. Dom thought he read that the Captain was a certified mech pilot.
"the layout of this destroyer is different than the carriers I have served on before, but I am learning my way around the ship ma'am" said Dom as he danced around her question. The truth was, Dom never acclimated to any assignment. To him, this was just another assignment to him, getting his own vessel.
"That was not what I asked; from your file you want command... You wanna know why I got this post; I talked to people, became their friend, became someone they could count on for more than just doing my job... Doing your job just as a job gets you nowhere... You have to latch on with both hands IMPRESS... Make people want you... So; have you made any interesting discoveries about this place; anything you could find useful... Any reason you would want to stand out... Aside from at some point wanting to be a leader... There are thousands of officers who want to be leaders... So... what here makes you want to stand out and how do YOU as a soldier stand out from say Extra Epic Pilot Commander Number 12?" She asked; she knew her talk was likely of no use; she was sure previous leaders told him this but he was intent on his work history hopefully being noticed by someone who mattered... Which apparently it had otherwise why would he be the leader of one of the prototype units.
"I'll keep that in mind, Ma'am" said Dom in a monotone voice. He thought she was rambling on like most of the old time geezers that have gotten the military into the situation it was, leaders like Yuka where a start, but Dom knew the old ways were corrupt and not very good, but it would be inappropriate to correct her. So he decided not to say anything in response to her bold statement. He had Senator Candor in his pocket, well assuming this assignment goes well. (edited)
She noticed he reacted just as she thought he would. She knew her statement would go one ear and out he other; so much for giving advice... Whatever though. She then said. "Well Lieutenant was there anything else I can assist you with or shall I dismiss you?"
"Would you like a status report, Ma'am" asked Dom, as he wondered if they were actually going to get to business? He was assigned to the ship for a reason.
"Would I like a report; Lieutenant; you just got here... We are finishing a refit and upon completing that we are going into a fight with the FSF that might get you and pilots killed so; would I like a report on your units status when in all reality you could be replaced again... The only way you can count on surviving is by meeting people who WANT to be around you... That is unless you don't care that your colleagues won't help you when you are in a firefight... There is a difference between following protocol and being someone the "kids" can look up to." She seemed to be getting rather blunt; seeing him not seem to care pissed her off especially when she "saw" her boyfriend die in front of her on DS741... This guy may have the military experience but had he actually SEEN war up close and personal. She had been part of Aidan's talks with other crew about what it is like to see a friend die in your arms... She partly understood why this guy might detach but his lack of seeming to care about anything but duty pissed her off immensely. She may have been getting unprofessional but she was made a CO due to her less than normal response to things; emotions and personal interaction were part of it otherwise they could just get robots to fight war for them... Just send a bunch of AIs to murder each other like had occurred in past wars.
"The main bay is fully operational, the secondary bay is barely operational and the alternate bay, where we keep a lot of the drones is still giving us issues with the grave plating" called out Dom in anger. What she said really pissed him off. He reached in his pocket and slapped dog tags down at her table. They were the tags of the men and women he served with it in his piloting days, he had seen his fair share of combat as well. Dom was angry about this war, but he was not mad at Yuka, he was angry that people like Darius rose to power for everything that Yuka had stated. He was a soldier, a pilot, a brilliant strategist, under his supervision, he kept the kill count down to 10% on the DFS Falco, before he became to the AFCO, one out of three pilots would not return. Each loss, made him more distant, each foolish decision by the powers that be in this corrupt system of theirs just fueled his fire, to want to command a ship. Dom did not express his feelings but he did have them. How dare this young woman, insult him like that!
"You are dismissed." Yuka said trying to hold back additional feelings herself. She despised Darius and his people especially with what they could do to defenseless worlds like the one RINZ came from; just capturing a non-combatant planet like that and experimenting on them; the leaders of FSF did not care who they killed... Did not care what they did to get where they were and neither did the Admirals that Hukari had replaced after the wars of 4560 and 4562. In a way she was in the same thought as Dom was previously; as much as Hukari and even this group tried how much change would one ship, one crew and a few GOOD men and women actually accomplish; the system was too fucked up to fix except by radical change like the one that Hukari did to even found the Federation in the first place but that would mean more people would die. This whole situation was not ideal but at least they had chosen to go die for their "homeland" planets like RINZ homeworld had no choice in the matter. (edited)
Dom had not yet even talked about the clamping mechanism not latching properly on the support vessels attached to the exterior of the DFS Lavie. This destroyer was not designed to be a light carrier. He knew this was a mistake, trying to make the destroyer a light carrier, he had thought about designing a new light carrier, but at the moment he needed to give Senator Candor's plan a chance, despite the fact, he believe it would fail. He grabbed his dog tags, he snapped to the position of attention. "Aye aye Ma'am" said Dom, as he did a direct about face, and walked out the door. He was a pissed off, and the Captain was a little pissed off. He could not believe how immature she was, she needed to learn to control her emotions. He was concerned if she would be able to lead the officers and enlisted under her command. He prayed she could. (edited)
Captain Yuka Layton
Ensign Emily Martinez
DFS Lavie, Ready Room
Captain Yuka Layton’s Office
August 20, 4566, 0910 hrs
After the rather questionable meeting with the new flight operations chief Yuka was stuck in her thoughts. She was now staring at the list of dead officers from the last battle; some of whom she knew and would consider friends. The tags he produced reminded her of them. Maybe his point of view was a better one for someone to be in command with but she did not care because treating her comrades like just another soldier... No she would not do that.. She would risk her life for ANYONE on this ship even though technically by policy EVERYONE on this ship should die for her since she was seen as more valuable. She hated those parts of the rules; everyone was her responsibility and that meant she would gladly give her life for them.
Emily noticed her brother storming off the bridge, again he avoided making eye contact. She wondered if he even noticed her. Emily was curious when the Captain would call her into the ready room. She sat down at the helmsman station. She had yet to meet the new captain. There was nothing to do on the ship, it was still docked at the station.
Yuka was pulled from the list of the dead to the list of new personnel; another member of his family... Sh figured she should get this one over with too... She was not looking forward to this. She got up from her desk and exited the bridge. Sakura was about to get up but Yuka stopped her. "Ensign Martinez... Come with me." She said speaking to the woman at the helm. One of the other reserve helm officers came over to take over the station.
Emily popped out of the chair and made a quick dash over to the captain's ready room. She followed Yuka into the ready room. She stood in front of the desk and at the position of attention. "Ensign Emily Martinez reporting as ordered, Captain" said Emily, she was nervous to meet the new captain, but also excited at the same time.
"At ease." Yuka said as she took a seat putting the lists to the side so she could forget about them for now. "How are you adjusting to your new post here?" She asked.
"Captain, I love it here, people are very nice" said Emily in an eager and pleasing tone. (edited)
"So... What advice do you have and what do you think of this crew so far..."
"crew is very nice, they all seem very happy to be here, well most of them" said Emily as she thought of her brother. He did not seem very happy. However this was not about him. "I am still new aboard, I have no advice to give at this point" suggested Emily in an upbeat tone.
"I see... Well have you spoken with the helm chief; do you have your duty shift information and quarters assignment?"
"I have, Captain" said Emily as she went on "I am assigned to beta shift" said Emily with a grin. She loved her shift, she loved the assignment. She was a rookie, still new, had not been through a combat situation. She was still green and screaming new career officer.
"She is so much different from her brother; how did he not slit her throat from her cheerfulness...." Yuka said in her mind. "... You interested in having a talk about non-work matters?" Yuka asked.
Emily was not sure what she meant, she tried to think about what Yuka has asked, "I do like to play the piano" she suggested. She was still naive about war, and she was not sensing the Captain's frustration with her brother. (edited)
"Your brother..." Yuka said wondering how to best put her statement then she posed it as a question. "How did he not murder you... being literally opposites..."
Emily was not sure how to address her concerns and to answer her question. She stood there, and then after a few moments and she smiled "Familia" said Emily. She did not see the side of Dom that the Captain did. Family was important to him and to her. "we come from a family 10, he was always the serious one, in the family" pointed out Emily.
"he does not seem to value friendship and comrades... He lost people but that is no reason to completely shut yourself off and then not interact with people unless it is duty related... It is very lonely in a space tin can with NO ONE but yourself to interact with..."
"he is very secluded, but he does have friends" said Emily. She was not really comfortable talking about him in a negative manner. She smiled as she said "he grows on you, Captain."
"That is pretty much like saying he is an ass until you get to know him... that is an impossible statement... I'll keep my thought to myself though... Well I do not really have much else to say right now... I am sorry."
"he is a good guy Captain, I swear" said Emily, she was not sure how to comfort the Captain in regards to her brother. She loved her brother, she had faith in him. She could not believe the Captain and her brother did not get a long, she was getting that vibe. She wondered how she could help her captain get a long with her brother and how to get her brother to get a long with the captain. (edited)
"I only hope he makes friends before he becomes the next Sirus or Julian so someone can save him from that fate... Was there anything else you want to talk about... If not you are free to go..."
"He has family on the Lavie, Captain, I will try to talk to him for you and for the crew" said Emily. She would express the captain's concerns to him.
Yuka did not know what else to say so she just left it at that for now. She hoped she would be less like this with this girl in the future as she seemed nice enough she was just in her thoughts right now.
Emily snapped to the position of attention. "Permission to be dismissed, Captain" she asked.
"Granted." Yuka said simply hoping she could pull her head out of her current thought process to get some things done.
Emily walked towards the exit, before she left she turned around and said "if it helps at all Captain, he has friend, Sarissa. Maybe she can give better insight, I am only his baby sister, but she is a friend" suggested Emily as she hoped that would help the Captain. She walked out of the ready room. (edited)
Lieutenant J.G. Dom Martinez
The Unknown Maintenance Chief
DFS Lavie, Shuttle Bay 2
Captain Yuka Layton’s Office
August 20, 4566, 0930 hrs
Kiyoko sat back in in the Seeker continuing to read her book still waiting for her patrol orders.
Dom made record time re-entering bay 2, the main bay of the Lavie. He could see the five mechs were being pulled into the docking plate to be lowered down to the maintenance bays. Three more mechs were in alignment, waiting on a fourth mech that was being pulled up from the maintenance bay. Dom walked passed two of three mechs and could see an officer sitting in in the mech, she appeared to be reading something, he could not tell what she was reading.
"your patrolling sector 3, I want a full scan of that sector, the new intelligence officer is boarding the station, and he is going to want up to date information in sector 3, sensors logs indicated activity three days ago" said Dom, as he tried to put the un pleasant encounter with his Captain behind him.
Kiyoko nodded setting down her book. "Understood." She responded in her typical cold fashion. He was technically a rank below her but considering how the maintenance folks were reacting to him she figured he was one of the flight deck leads and so she figured he was able to give her orders. AMC reported to itself but it was always best to let flight deck people tell you where to go as usually there were not AMC flight deck folks; you took your orders from the flight deck or the AMC Wing Commander which was also this ship's Second Officer so Kiyoko figured she would likely be getting her orders in the future from this Lt. JG. She was grateful that he had not yelled at her yet for her yelling at the tech; maybe he did not know. She best not push her luck as he could put her on some horrible duty that she would loath even more than this. She changed the Seeker from diagnostic mode to flight mode and began checking over the systems. "Lieutenant Kiyoko Ino in the Seeker requesting permission to launch." She said over her com putting her helmet on. The flight control and range officer told her that the bay was clear. "Confirmed; launching..." She said as she closed her hatch and then took a deploying stance and the gravity field went around her mech as the launch control officer came over the intercom and red lights flashed. "All deck personnel please clear there area... Deployment operations are commencing. Repeat... Please clear the flight deck... deployment operations are commencing." Once he got confirmation that all the techs were out of the way and people were not going to get crushed by her leaving the lights turn green and the mech is fired out of the ship.
Once the launch orders are clear one of the senior bay technicians comes over to Dom. "Sir; Lt. Ino told off one of my men who was conducting repairs on the Destroyer."
Dom had cleared the main bay area and was heading up to his operation center. A very irate looking maintenance technician chief was storming up to Dom. He was already in a bad mood, he wondered what the chief wanted. He better tread lightly though Dom. Last thing he wanted was to continue his heated argument with another crew member.
"Okay, what did your technician do to upset one of my pilots, Chief" asked Dom. He knew technically they were not his pilots, but he was a pilot by training, and often thought of them as part of his. He was responsible for their maintenance and storage and partially there flight plan approvals.
"She yelled at him telling him he was doing his job wrong and that he was incompetent; she then put her hand on him."
Dom continued to monitor consoles and was reviewing flight plans, monitoring mech deployments while shuffling through the drone gravitational storage issue in bay three. But listening to this Chief whine was getting on his nerves. Dom turned around to look at him. "pilots in general do not place their hands on the maintenance crew, what are you not telling me, Chief" asked Dom, in a monotone level voice. He wanted to snap the man a new one, for keeping information to himself.
"I'm telling you she's a loose cannon; haven't you read her file... She almost hurt my man... Or would you rather I take my complaint to the XO?"
"Ensign Summors, take charge for a moment" said Dom as he motioned for the Chief to follow him into his office. "shut the door chief" ordered Dom.
He did as he was told and the Ensign took over the flight deck.
"Chief this is the last time you threaten to action over my head, you will respect the chain of command, am I clear" asked Dom. His voice was a little more irritated.
"I will hear you out, I will talk to your technician and I will talk to the pilot before I take any action, but if you try to pull a fast one over me, I will write your ass up for insubordination, before you ever go over my head, you will allow me investigate the matter" said Dom in a stern tone. "Am I clear, Chief" asked Dom.
"Teach her to respect my men."
"I appreciate the fact you are concerned for your men, but I did not hear you say Chief, that you understand my orders, and Chief you better drop this attitude or you will find yourself under investigation for insubordination, do I make myself clear" said Dom again in a stern tone.
"Lieutenant... Are you saying you believe me and my technicians are beneath your pilots?"
"Chief, I have not taken any sides, all I am hearing is you say is a pilot yelled at your technician, a good officer does not make snap decision, and as a Maintenance Chief, you should keep an objective mind, even if you can not tolerate the person, you don't have to like the person, but you have to work with the person, I suggest you find away of working with that pilot, and that pilot will find a way to work with you, I am not your babysitter, I am your commanding officer, is this clear to you, Chief" asked Dom.
"She assaulted one of my men sir... that is the only reason I am here."
"I advised you Chief, I will investigate this matter, is there anything else, Chief" asked Dom.
"That is all; sir." he salutes Dom
"good, get out of my office, we have work to do, dismissed" said Dom, he walked out of the office, and back over to his AFCO Ensign Summors.
The tech leaves going back to the deck.
